The Chumby is dead

Posted In News - By Jesse on Thursday, April 19th, 2012 With 1 Comment

The Chumby, described on their website as “The chumby is a compact wi-fi device that displays useful and entertaining information from the web” is probably dead as we know it.  Besides never being really picked up in the world outside of geeks, their webstore is flashing an alarming message “The site is closed temporarily”, a notice never enjoyed on a webstore.

For two days now, that message has been given to anyone looking to buy hardware from Chumby, it really does seem like they are packing up to go to the great gadget company heaven in the sky.  They stopped making their own branded hardware in 2011, with the company’s Duane Maxwell confirming the death of Chumby’s store in a forum posting, noting that there was “no point in keeping the store around once inventory was exhausted,”

Other members of the Chumby community have noticed that emails sent to the support team have been headed into nowhere.  While the Chumby OS network is on, there is no guarantee happening that it won’t be flicked off at any time.

Go give a visit to your Chumby, it is enjoying the last days of it’s mediocre life in it’s deathbed.

Chumby’s really not dead. All this RIP info came from one comment by the former CEO Oien who screwed the users and left without a word in December. But 5 months after the “death,” the servers are still up,the forums are jumping and the community is figuring out ways to keep the devices running, sometimes better than before. Really good stuff to see if you value the spirit of truly Open Source platforms. Check out the forum at:

Maybe some of you can help us keep the lights on. Chumby’s no Android, but at least Google doesn’t know what time you wake up or exactly where you are all day.
